phosphate reactors

What are the contents in a phosphate reactor that helps with the removing of phosphates in the water? I've seen a lot of these reactors and my LFS doesn't know much about them so they're not much help but I've never seen what are in these reactors and I can't seem to find anything at the site what are their contents?

It's a specialty resin that reacts with phosphate. there are many DIy systems on the net too.
