I was at the lfs today and an employee told me I shouldn't be feeding market shrimp because they sometimes use phosphates that could hurt my fish as preservatives. I went home and checked the bag of shrimp I have been using and sure enough...

"...shrimp, salts, sodium phosphates (to retain moisture)"

Is this shrimp I have safe for my fish or should I buy a different brand?

HMMM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_phosphate

It looks to be pretty common in alot of human foods. And i would think it is of no concern. But that is a guess. The shrimp that i use has it as well. And i have been using the same brand for around 4-5 years. So it definetly does not pose a immediate threat.

Bump for more info from a expert.

No cause for concern with phosphates. The issue with high phosphate level is this is the direct cause of green water phenomenon which is something you would not want for sure. A few people however desire green water as it does help promote color and body development of most fish.

I just buy the frozen 4 pound boxes of market shrimp . nothing but shrimp.

iv feed tons of thats tuff to everything i own never a problum. I work at a lfs and i dont even buy out stuff haha.

i buy the fresh stuff at the asian market. pretty sure it's just plain old shrimp...
