This just came in at my LFS as a Crocodile Gar, So I assume its a hybrid of some sort. Ive been trying to look up Crocodile Gar photos online and cant really find anything that looks anything like it.

I want it so bad, but I fear it will probably get huge and i can't handle any more monsters.

Anyone got a positive ID and possible adult size?

croc gar are a hybrid between either a spotted and an alligator gar or a florida and an alligator gar. the fish photographed is not a gar at all. it looks like some kind of characin to me? i know that doesnt narrow it down much, but if it helps any it's not a gar.

hmm.. im looking up characins on that suggestion, and the only ones i can find that are similar are these two http://www.fishbase.org/Photos/ThumbnailsSummary.php?ID=12404

I should also point out, that this fish has two thin feeler like fins (like on a gourmai), that he holds along side his body, in the bottom photo you can see them, would that also indicate that its not a gar? I dont see these fins on the characins either though

an lfs near me has some of the fish you have photographed. its about 30 minutes away, but they had them labeled with a scientific name. if i am out that way i could look into it for you. i am absolutely possitive this fish is not a true gar.

Not a characin, its missing the adipose fin.
Stab might have a correct ID
