I just noticed in the other thread you've kept Vulpinus, vampire tetra or whatever other name they have :)

They've always fascinated me, they do remind me of a deep sea fish.

I was considering one recently before I heard that they are not as aggressive as they look, and also they die after a year or 2 in captivity.

Could you tell me about your experience with these fish? :)

Cheers,
JR

Hey rumble,

I've kept Rhaphioidon vulpinus and Hydrolycus scombroides before... very interesting fish. Like you mentioned, these are not very mean or aggressive at all (besides feeder size fish)... but rather skittish... I suggest getting a group of them (3min. at least) and keeping them in a species tank of their own... at least at first. Let them fully adapt to the tank, before putting w/ any other tankmates. Be sure to keep tank highly oxygenated, using powerheads, air stones, etc., and create a strong fast current flow inside. I would also add a few pieces of driftwood (long slender pieces, non bulky) and place accordingly to current flow. Try making hideaway "drop off" areas for them to hide and be posted at. Along with live feeder fish,,, they will also take other foods. I had mine taking cut pieces of earthworms, freeze dry krill, and even Hikari cichlid gold pellets.

Hopefully this is some help to you in keeping... if you have any other questions, lmk... I'll try to answer them the best that I can. Posted below are some more pics, including my vulpinus taking freeze dried krill. Good luck!
