yeah its spelled payara and there more of other characins but i guess partly piranhas

i'd say if your thinking of getting a payara (Hydrolycus) there are three types, now correct me on the spelling if im wrong, but Hydrolycus Scomberoides, Hydrolycus Tatauaia. and Hydrolycus Armatus. H. Scomb get around 13-16" at max, rarely hit 10" though. H. Tatauaia hit the 18-20" mark (not 100% sure on that as you don't get much on them.) finally H. Armatus, the largest of the Hydrolycus genus, reaching around the 3' mark. the minimum for the scomb would roughly be about a 75 but recommended 125 gallon tank. tat would be about 180 gal to 220 gal. and armatus need almost a pond.

don't take this info to far, as im no expert, but im offering up what info i have scraped from alot of reading

Payara are often refered to as Vampire Tetras or Vampire fish - theres plenty of articles in the Other Characins Forum. I own one of the 5 known species not that particular one tho - the one in the video is Hydrolycus Aramatus.

honestly ? how did this end up here ? i mean seriously the occasional silver dollar or pacu thread is fine here as they are somewhat related. But a payara? they arn't any closer to piranhas than neon tetra's are.

you'd probably get more helpful answers i this was in the "other characins" section

Good luck
