Was born in fla and my dad lives there. He emailed me about a cichlid that was let loose in a local pond down there. He is trying to figure out what it is..... Here is a pic my dad took, can anyone ID for me?! Thanks!!!

thats tuff.....

The holes that they are digging in the pond are about the size of basketballs, some being significantly bigger than that...... Thought if anyone would be able to ID it would be someone on MFK!!!! :)

Looks like a Mozambique tilapia. They can be found in Florida.

yeah, i would have said blue tilapia, but definitely a tilapia of some kind

When I had my breeding pair they piled up all the gravel to the sides of the tank so this is what they are probably doing in the pond. They will probably populate the pond in a short period of time as they use a method of 'mass breeding' to take over areas. They are a very sucessful fish as they can adapt to almost all conditions. They also eat almost anything available which makes them a threat to the native fish. Although they have pretty bad eyesite so they are not great predators. I think the mouth of the male has been adapted so that they can dig the holes as if you get the chance to see down the throat of them they have no teeth for quite a distance from the front of their mouth but then pretty far down their throat they have 2 rows of teeth. I will include some pictures of my pair which are now in a friends tank.
