Just got this little guy today..... Was so ugly that I had to have him! :) Usually research fish more before I buy them but he was the only one......... and I happened to have a open tank..... You know how it goes! Anyone here ever have one? Getting some conflicting info online. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

need brackish water. ive caught them in full salt before. eats anything that moves in a flash

Just live food? Any idea how big? Heard anywhere from 6 inches to a foot....... I know they are poisionous and not very active. That is about the extent of my knowledge. Ideal tank size? Also, heard rough on tankmates...... Is this an option at all?

If you could find out the species name (the pics a little too blurry to tell..) then it would be a major help in telling you specifics, like the substrate. That really does vary from species to species. Thanks!

Wetwebmedia.com has a good FAQ on them if you do a search for freshwater lionfish it should come up.

Mine is in brackish water with a SG of 1.017 at the moment. He didnt eat too well at first but in time he settled down and is eating thawed frozen shrimp from a feeding stick or if a shove it gently into his hidey hole.

He was in a divided tank with some puffers but he got past the divider and is livingin a baracle they never go into. He'll be getting his own tank very soon to make sure they dont tear him apart if they catch him out and about.

Mines about three inches long at the moment but i've seen one locally thats closer to 8 inches.

When i get mine into his own tank i'll be using sand substrate for him since he shows some tendencies to burrow under things if he gets nervous.

They are very cute fish and typically hardy but some waste away if they dont get what they want they can be stubborn in my experience with them.

When i had mine, I had it straight freshwater. I fed it just feeders because thats all it would eat. It was about 7 inches and ate anything that it could fit into its huge mouth. it is also called the grunting toadfish because it makes a grunting noise that scared the sh*t out of me the first time i heard it. I had it in sand but it kicked up the sand quite a bit and the sand gets stuck in the filter so i just put in gravel and added a cave so it could hide in. And yes they are not very active at all. But it is cool to see them eat because they are lightning fast. One second their there and a fraction of a second later their gone. I had the ph neutral 0 am, 0 Nitrite, and it did good in these conditions. hope this helps.

Mine is now and it literally took him....three months to do it readily but he's a good little critter about it now.
