Flagtails usually do best when kept either solo or in a group of 6+. They are schooling fish in the wild, but they tend to pick on each other when kept in small groups. They grow extremely slowly, but they'll eventually hit 16"+ so it also takes a pretty large tank to house a school of them. I bought mine 6 years ago at 9", and he's currently around 14-15". They're a great solo fish though, and they can be kept with just about any other community fish, even small tetras. They're also a good algae remover.

The main tip I'd give is to make sure your lid is sturdy. They can be very skittish, especially when the lights come on in the morning, and they're very powerful jumpers.

I have good tops on as I am used to aros and gars. also the lights come on well after the sun has been up. I can get more and with my pond (8x8 or 8x10) going in my basement I'll have the space for a group. cool on the small fish community. might have a tank for the other after all. plan to have a large (180gal-300gal) tetra community.

Agree 100% with you... they are awesome, awesome fish to have!!!
I must just add that despite being a bit skittish at times mine have all become very, very tame and as soon as I put my hand in the tank for anything they come and suck my hand looking for food.
Mine grew from about 7cm/4inch? to about 20cm in a year which was very fast but once they hit that size the growth slowed down tremendously
They can be kept with any small fish but once they get bigger they can be kept with big cichlids as well. They dont look for trouble with anyone but dont back down and hide away either.
We also keep one specimen per tank
One thing they love is bloodworms.... mine get one little block daily over and above their food and thats a delicacy to them

Yeah, mine is the same way. It seems that the older they get, the more calm they become.

here is a pic of one of them after settling in
