So I've decided that my Jack Dempsey needs to be taken out of my community tank and given a space to call his own. She's basically claimed the entire tank as her own, my pictus cats are stuck in the top corner; when they come down to try and explore the bottom or sit in a cave she comes and nips em back into the corner. Bugs my bichirs the same way and chases the convicts as well.

If you had to choose between a 40b(36"L x 18"W x 16"H) & a 55 (48 1/4"L x 12 3/4"W x 20"H) what would you go with? The intent is to keep her by herself, so space for tankmates isn't really an issue.

I know 'bigger is always better:headbang2' but, would you rather have the extra length & height in the 55, or the extra 5 inches of turnaround room in the 40?

Ideally this isn't going to be her tank for life. In (hopefully less than) 2 years I'll be looking to get a 180gal after moving into a house. At that point the JD could either get into that tank if she isn't as prone to take over the entire thing, or she can have the 65 after the rest of my stock moves into the 180. Then I could use whatever I get now for my breeding convicts and use their 20 for fry growout, sump, tropical community, whatever.

So...assume that for 3 years my female jack (currently about 4 inches) will be in this tank...40b or 55?

Both tanks sound good. Personally I would go with the 55g. I say this because of the height factor. But either one sounds good.

I say it all comes down to your personal taste. I would do 40. That is only bcuz I have never had a 40. Seems shinier than a 55 to me.

I think I'd rather go with a 40, the depth seems pretty important to me. It has the same footprint as my 65 as well, so the stand is interchangeable should that ever become an issue (probably wouldn't, but still nice to know)

I think its to the point now that if I don't have a plan for getting a new tank set up in the next month or so (plan not to exceed a 2 month period after that first month) I'm going to have to get rid of the JD :\ Really don't want to, but its the only fish in my 65 thats upsetting the balance and messing with EVERYTHING in the tank. She needs her own tank or bust:(

So I'm going to be able to get the money together to get a new tank.

I'm still torn between 55 & 40b. Any good advice? I feel like the 55 would just be too shallow from front to back?

Man...I have no idea:irked:

I think I'll probably end up with the 40...I dunno.
