I am wondering how you all decided on the type of fish you want to keep. I can never decide and stick with a type of fish to keep. Im not sure if it is my ADD kicking in or what, but whenever I stock my tank I am only satisfied for a little while before I start to feel like I am not happy with the type of fish I am keeping. I know I love cichlids and I like the look of community tanks but I can never stick with whatever stock I have at the time. I like big fish, I like colorful fish, I like them to have a good personality and I like them to be active. Maybe I have yet to own the type of fish that can keep me interested. Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone have any advice on a type of stocking plan that I may love long term? Or am I just nuts????

no, i have the sae problem sometimes. honestly, i look at all the care that would have to go into a stock. if it looks like somthing that would be expensive or take up a ton of time to maintain, then i usually decide against it. i am also military, so moving is a constant thing for me. i would love to have a saltwater tank, but i think that trying to move a reef tank vross country would be a huge pain. not to mention, reef tanks can get expensive. long story short, i make my decisions on the requirements of the stock. i see that you live in norfolk. i used to be stationed in Oceana. whenever i go back, i have to make a trip to animal jungle lol.

I love animal jungle! Yeah I also consider if I would be able to maintain a type of fish but my main thing is that I cant decide if I prefer a bunch of smaller fish or fewer larger fish. The small fish I have now are active but lack personality. The larger fish I've owned in the past were great but when I had them I felt like I wanted to be able to stock more fish. I think I would be fine with about 4 larger fish that are active with great personality, but I habe no idea what type would fit that description.

First off, I choose fish by whether I can truly take care of them properly or not.
I would love to have an umbiferum or Boulengerochromis microlepis, but I will probably never have a tank large enough.
Aside from the above, I choose fish by whether the part of the world they come from fascinates my or not, and because breeding fish is important to me, whether keeping an endangered species may extend its existence.
Because of these reasons I keep a number of species from Madagascar, and because certain areas of Mexico are also threatened with environmental degradation, I keep a number of species from each area, among others from other threatened areas.
Color, size, or personality traits mean much less to me than the above factors.

Wow thats a great way to choose fish! I have a 125 gallon tank with 2 angelfish a bunch of blue rams that I will soon sell off and 7 female bettas. I have lost interest in all of these fish. They are almost too peaceful.

I think that's normal if you really like fish. I've been doing this for 24 years and the only way I could get all the fish I want is to have about 50 or more tanks(I have 1 running right now).
