I am considering about buying a ebjd, the lfs has some 2.5''-3'', how do I pick out a good ebjd? I want the ebjd to look like the 1st picture as an adult, not the 2nd picture. Should I go for one with few black markings or a light blue, what?

Good EBJD is hard to come by... rarely are they cheap...

The key is to either find a breeder who can ship them to you or u keep hunting for a LFS that has good ones.. 90% of the time u WONT find any good gene EBJDs...

But there is that 10% chance that u'll find one at a LFS...

Anyways... what you need to look out for in a baby EBJD is what are their colors like? Are they stable? Meaning are the blue blue.. faded/pale blue or Dark Blue..

I would NEVER purchase a EBJD that is dark blue.. almost black.. this means they have internal infection.. or some kind of disease.... and will die in 1-2 months... (have had experience)

With that said... even dark blue EBJDs can go wrong and later become dark color as well... I had a EBJD died on me... he turned dark black in 1 month time.. His brother fish is still alive... but had internal infection as well.. I cured him... but he hasn't grown much since....

So u have to look for the ones that aren't deformed but have strong gene... can't really say what is and what isn't.. but normally u can tell when a fish is really off... like they look retardard or dumb....

Here are some pic of Good and BAD ebjds...

Now.. the bad...

their either too faded.. or too yellow green looking or very very dark...

Not ALL dark are 100% bad.. but it would mean their not strong genes... and its really tough to find good ones...

I've only encounter 1 store that had the best EBJDS.. but were a bit pricy and i never picked it up... i regret tho... probably should have bought 2... :(

Top picture is a showcase fish... 1 in a thousand. Bottom fish is beaten-up and might look MUCH better if it had grow up under good conditions. Your ONLY reasonable course is to buy good stock from a good breeder who can show you pcitures of their breeding stock. The odds are heavily against you at an lfs.

I'm going to have to disagree with you a little, but it may be that we're not agreeing on what is "light", "dark", and "dark blue almost black".

I'm not getting the pics to quote, but the second pic down on your "good" list might have some beaknose potential, and the very last pic on your "bad" list is hard to see clearly, so I can't tell if there is a beaknose there, but the color (and that's what you've been talking about) is pretty spectacular, imo. The fish in the second pic down in the "bad" group also look pretty good (other than MAYBE having some beaknose potential). Also, a lot of your "good" pictures are of grown-out adults, which are hard to compare to juvenile fish. I should also point out that a couple of the fish in the "good" list are quite dark, while the top too pics show light-colored fish?

Anyway, I'd be more concerned about the shape and finnage than about the color. The color of these fish tends to improve with age.

I am a breeder, and could set you up with a nice blue dempsey in the near future. Would probably have to ship to you though unless you are in northern CA.
