Hello MFK's,

I'm going to be picking up my very first silver tomorrow. But before i did, i wanted to make sure i was getting a good fish. What should i be looking for? color? posture? behavior? anything specific? Thanks

look for one that active color doesnt matter they all turn silver, ask if the shop keeper can feed the fish

Other then looking for general defects as you would with any other fish there really isn't too much. On thing is avoid any that look to have an underbite, many silvers will develop PLJ, protruding lower jaw. As far as behavior watch to see if you can spot the dominate of the group. He should be swimming throughout the tank and may be bullying others. Avoid any that are reluctantly swimming or sitting still near the bottom of the tank.

check out its fins and body to make sure everything is in good shape and nothing is torn, battered or missing-we bought one missing most of one of its pectoral fin because we didnt properly check and look at it and just rushed into buying it
Also try and pick the biggest one there as juvies are a little more difficult to keep alive because they are fragile at this stage
Also speaking from experience- if its young/small try and keep it alone until its big enough to fend for itself or comfortable with tank mates- ours got attacked and killed by a very small/young oscar thats never shown aggression before..
