I am picking up a used 125 tonight. What should I do in preperation before putting my fish in. This is currently set up and established and i have never done this. I know HOW to do it just not what precautions to take. If the gravel is in it should i just leave it and mix it with sand? may look nice. Should I trust that he didnt have parasites or anything? This was a community fish tank with live plants. OR should I just drain it all the way and scrub it and all that jazz that you would do with an empty tank?

I would break it down and clean it out, personally, unless you're close friends with the person you're getting the tank from. IMO it's not worth taking the chance at losing fish.

Strip it down and put it back together. It's more fun that way anyway.

Make sure it's still water tight when you get it to yours! I picked up a second hand 180 a couple of weeks ago that i know was sealed when i collected it as it still had some water in. It was leaking by the time i got it to my place and in position, i'm now waiting for the 4th attempt at getting it to seal again to finish setting!

Oh, and definatly give it a thorough clean!

not as fun in 20 degrees though :WHOA:
Avoid at all costs, future problems...125gallon w/gravel heavy as hell to move
125gallon w/o gravel not so heavy as hell to move...

Sand and gravel do not mix well, sand will go to the bottom gravel will rise...use all new or wash extremely well...I bleach it and rinse thoroughly...

yup that's what I'd do...

the tank is completely setup right now. i am helping him tear it down tonight. Maybe ill just transfer my sand and use the gravel for something else. ill just put it in the garage and wash it out i guess even though it is freezing out there! thats a big tank to rinse.

I would break it down as well. Are you getting any fish with it?
