I am picking up a female motoro that has been at a friends house for a few years. I was wondering If I should quarantine her before I put her in with my rays? quarantine is possible, but I would rather not because of the huge pain to get another tank ready for her. would it be that risky?

have u seen it in person? if it looks healthy and is eating i wouldnt worry about it IMO

ALWAYS QUARENTINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i learned the hard way ONCE!!!!!!

The ray IS going to end up with my other rays, What would be the benefit of quarantining if the ray looks healthy and has been that way for the past few years?

If you trust your friend and the ray looks good and healthy then I would not QT it. It really depends on how far you have to move the ray and the amount of stress added to it during the move. If anything, I would put a divider up to make sure it is eating before letting it mingle with the others.

Put it this way, if it's not healthy you risk your other rays. By qting the ray for a week you could potentially not only save the new ray but your other rays.

the new ray could easily be thriving at your friends house while still having internal parasites. once you move the ray, the stress associated with moving can cause a suppression in the immune system. this ray now, who before kept the parasites in check because his immune sytem was strong, now begins to eat less int he new system. the parasites take over in the rays own body and may or may not begin to affect the other rays in your system who have now become stressed because of the new ray, or new measures youre taking to get the new ray to eat, etc...

in short.... do what you want... but dont say i didnt warn you.

real quick... true story...

i was going to buy a flower ray from my friend who has been keeping many flowers and mantillas for years. i was not going to quarentine the new fish as he had it for at least a year in his system and he had not introduced any new fish or fed live food to his system in at least 1 year. i felt safe that this ray could go right into my tank. i was 3 weeks away from driving up to his house to pick up the ray... my excitement was building!

the day before i was going to take the drive up i called my friend to confirm our plans. he regretfully informed me that the animal i was planning on p[urchasing has DIED! the ray had developed fungus a few days prior, stopped eating and died.

if this had been 5 days prior, i would have happily and foolishly brought the ray home, put it in my main system, and it probably would have still been harboring whatever killed it. likely, it would have infected my whole system and i may have lost thousands of dollars worth of rays!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FYI fungus, or saprolegniales as it is scientifically referred to is caused by a waterbourne mold that lies dormant in most if not all aquarium systems. this mold tanks hold when the fish is stressed. it attacks areas of the skin tissue that have been damaged in netting, transport, etc...

sorry im not telling you what you want to hear. i would like to hear catherine zeta jones tell me that she cant stop thinking about me and wants me to have my way with her but hey... lets face it... that aint happening!

sounds to me like you might be playing with fire...

good luck!

If the ray is healthy, and the tank he is comming from has not had any problems or any new fish added to it recently, then i'd say the QT period is already over. Especially if there has not been any fish added to their tank since they had the ray. But you would really have to trust your friend when he/she tells you they have never had an issue.

I would add directly to my tank if all of the above is correct.
