My convict is the pickiest dang eater! He's so frustrating. I've invested in multiple kinds of pellets (NLS, Hikari staple, gold, sinking gold, BioGold, sinking wafers, sinking carnivore wafers, HBH spirulina pellets). Ever since his gas bladder injury last July, which he's since completely recovered from, he refuses to eat any of the above pellets except the sinking carnivore wafers. Even then, he'll eat maybe two a day, and I have to offer them one at a time, or he eats the first then lets the other one rot.

He eats frozen krill, bloodworms, and brine shrimp with a healthy but not enthusiastic appetite. Fasting has not helped at all with appetite. His weight is just on the lower side of normal-looking. I'm ready to bang my head against the wall.

Now that he's recovered from his injury, I'm going to get half a dozen gold barbs and quarantine them for a month, then add them to his tank. Maybe a little competition will make him care about his food.

What do you all do with those "picky" fish who refuse just about everything, even after fasting?

Competition might just do the trick, it also never hurts for them to have something to chase and keep their minds occupied. Have you tried increasing the temp a little? Is the tank very bright? I’ve had fish act completely different once I subdued the lighting. Funny how sometimes a slight change changes behavior. Good luck I hope it works out for you.

Hey Aquanero, yes I've tried all of the things you suggested. :( All except adding the tankmates. I have two fixtures on the tank, and have tried any combination of just one (dark), the other (medium), or both (brighter). During the year the tank ranges from 75-85 degrees. His appetite is so-so no matter what. I'm glad he's my favorite fish I've ever had, because I'm putting more effort into his happiness than I ever have with another fish, haha.
