Hi all,

I'm trying to build a W/D to filter my new 500 gal pond. I put everything together but I think my main concern is there will not be enough water on the bottom where I have the heaters. The area of water below the drains will work out to be 7 gallons.

The bottom level will hold the heaters, second layer is scrubbies, top layer will be filter floss. Pump in the pond, spray bars in the top of the filter. Large PVC in the center will be cut below the top of the filter as an overflow.

I want some opinions on any changes I should make before I go further.

Thanks!

You should put filter media on top of the eggcrate and the water should cascade over it. I would have put the outlets lower. The scrubbies don't need to be submerged to develop bacteria. By being submerged they might become a Nitrate factory.

there will be filter floss on top of the eggcrate in the pic. The scrubbies are on another layer of eggcrate just above the drains, so they will not be submerged.

looks good get it cycling. should work well and there should be plenty of water in with the heaters, other option for the heaters is to take off your 90degree elbows for your drains back to the pond and put on T's and drop the heaters down in the down tubes. will have a constant flow of water across them, then just leave one solo in the bottom of the filterl.

put caps on the t's with holes cut for the cords for the heaters also extend the down tubes lower into the pond, they should bubble like you have air stones in them when they pull air down with the water.
