Pics of my SMB

I know this sound kind of silly, but it looks as if the smaller of the (2) is displaying a more defensive coloration. Its amazing how quickly their colors can change. The larger of the (2) probably doesn't feel threatened by the smaller one, so its color is more subdued.
I've noticed this with a tank of Sacramento Perch that I have the regular pleasure of observing. Of the (3) Perch in the aquariium, the largest is more of a subdued color, while the two smaller ones are always coloered a little darker. When any food is introduced to the tank, the smaller (2) will lose their dark mottling, and tend to look more like the largest. They all maintain this coloration until the slightest bit of aggression or territorial dispute begins, and then they'll switch back to their much darker mottling.

Perhaps you might add some fatheads to act as dithers, and see if anything changes. I too like the darker colors of a SMB myself. Regardless, VERY NICE FISH!

Great tank. I raised a couple of lmb along with with some blue gills, perch, and crappie. It was the best tank I ever had. What size is your tank? What do you feed you smallmouths? I love to fish topwater for smallmouth.

Really nice fish! I cant wait till my LMB are that big, which shouldnt be to long with how fast they are growing. Here is a pic of my most colorfull one but he is hiding....

of my two SMB, i had to get rid of the larger. he became too agressive and ate/killed all of my perch. i gave him to a firend of mine who i knew would give him a good home. The second SMB is still in the tank and just as dark. i've been feeding him shrimp on a daily basis and as a treat about once a month i get a couple small crawdads. the other fish in the tank, have been getting bloodworms once or twice a week and he will eat some of those too.
