My 230 Gallon Tank

Needs some work still, but I think it is well on its way. It has taken me a long time to collect all these fish. BTW, 'Black' Rhom is doing very nicely in 60 gallon sump :)

1 Breeding Pair Dovii
1 Red Texas
4 Barred Midas
4 presumed labiatusXcitrenellum (nice heads on young fish though)
2 Tomocichla tuba
4 Festae
2 Paroon Sharks
4 Synspilum
1 Tiger Datnoid
1 Oreochromis taganyica

Upcoming:
Growing out umbees and green texas.

Will be culling fish as they mature/pair. Will be ATTEMPTING to house them in a 'controlled' crowding environment. If it gets too rough, will be tossing trading in some. Kept both large pairs of 'Red Devils' as well as Festaes, Green Texas, Jags in the same tank with no problems whatsoever. What am I missing? With Dovii, Synspilum and Umbees, these are going to really fill the tank out, and will just keep my favorites. Trying to think of other gorgeous Central/S.A.s, but can't really come up with any.

Dang, that tank is...full. LOL!! I can't even begin to imagine what the aggression must be like. Crazy. Hoplarchus psittacus is a gorgeous and rare cichlid....you should look into them. Also, you could easily supplement some pike cichlids in there, definately make it look awesome for yaz!! Caquetaia species as well...just a few suggestions....wheres the red texas? I think i saw it but not sure...:P

Thanks for the compliments. They are a bit washed out, as the synspillums and festaes really come and go at the moment, depending on the mood the red texas instills in them.

The Red Texas is the 2nd fish from the top. Not exactly red, but I really love his shape. His hump is actually exploding now that I removed the hybrid female. His aggression level has tripled, which really confuses me at the moment. They were attempting to breed (and successfully guarded the area against all on comers), but they were probably sterile.

I think the psittacus is a terrific fish, and one that I never kept, but I don't think it would survive in my set-up. The aggression level is high at the moment between the red texas and the Dovii, and sometimes with the Midas, but really, I have no problems. If I got rid of, say, all the synsillums, or the midas, then I would bet the Dovii or the red texas would go attempt a take-over of the entire tank. Firm believer in 'controlled-crowding' aggressive cichlids, though I wouldn't dare put a butt in there!

The only thing that irritates me is the way they sometimes pick at one another's scales. If I get rid of the paroons (probably 1 year down the road), I would get grammodes, salvinis and firemouths again. Believe it or not, but my 4" firemouth pair were the kings of the tank, and my Red TExas is almost 7", Wolf is almost 8", but thinner than the texas. We will see what happens when the wolf matures though :)

Thats a nice assortment :)

Nice little dat :)

Wowie!

Now that is a cichlid set-up! If I were to do another SA/CA Cichlid Set-up, that is what I would want it to look like!

Im surprised all the fish look so nice and healthy, with no nipped fins!! Not to mention that lil' dat hanging tough in that neighborhood.

Very Nice!

I was actually VERY hesitant in putting him in there. He lived on the intake side of my weird sump since I got small umbees. As soon as I threw him in, he started fighting with all the cichlids. I was a bit amazed to say the least. Everyone basically pushes him around, but except for his first couple of days scrapping everyone, he hasn't been touched.

As for no split fins, I find if you throw too many in, all your cichlids look bad. Not enough, and you will only get a few good specimens. Keep throwing them in so they can never really hold much territory, and you won't see much damage on any of them. We will have to see when everything matures up, but so far so good.

Last time I did this with Festaes and so on (see above) the only problem I had was a 9" Fossochromis rostratus. BEAUTIFUL fish in real life (pics do not do it justice), but it is a killer. Will just keep scrapping the entire day, and will swim 'end to end' chasing those fish down.

I just hope I move into a bigger house so I can start on my indoor pond (figured I better start collecting now :D )

I would love to see the tank during feeding time! :D
