Can any one please tell me what it all appears I need to get the steering working? Everything else is ready to go. We hooked it up to the flusher today and it cranked up, ran, and shifted perfectly.

very nice little set up you got there JD
good river boat especially for 900

is the wiring for the steering a mess?

Nice....sorry I cant be more helpful than that

Looks like you may need to replace the whole steering system. Is it Teleflex brand?
I've got a similiar style boat, but it doesn't have any decking and is teller steering. It's also a Lowe.

Voss, it aint a mess, its totally missing!

J - thanks! Its no where near as nice as your wakeboard $$$$ boat but I think it will help me catch some fish! I might get my commercial fishing liscense cause its pretty cheap and fish catfish that sells to little shops like Asian grocers for $2 a pound and hybrid bass that sells for an amazing $4-5 a pound! Ive been seeing on the news how the commercial fishing on the river is doing good but no one is fishing! It only costs about $200 a year for the liscense and fees! I already have a 50ft gill net too that I can only use if I have the liscense.

spotfin, Im not sure what was on it before. All I have to figure out is if I need a rotary steering system or rack and pinion. Instalation should be breeze once I get the correct parts.

This winter the boat will get a completly new deck and carpet, a good cleaning and maybe paint as well as a completly redone connsole. It will be NICE after that! My bro in law (guy pictured) has his own construction company so weve got the tools, carpentry, and welding experience to turn it into something nice.

Nice rig, my assumption is a motor that old attached to the bar that moves with a pulley system, or rack/pinion.

Ive never seen the pulley system except for on really old boats that are kept in "original" shape. So, you are saying the rack and pinion is the system I need? Im going to stop by a couple places after work and find out too, but I dont trust mechanics.

Most likely, I've seen the rock/pinion system on a lot of Johnson Evinrude motors of that era, but I'm far from an old Mercury expert.

I re-read your description - 81 not 61, so the pulley system is probably long gone.

UPDATE:

Well weve put about $400 into the boat so far including the new steering system that works great. We also went ahead and lubed the lower, replaced most of the wires in the motor as they are getting a little dry rotted. Also we replaced all the vaccum tubes.

New problem:

I think we are getting air into the new fuel lines. The motor wont start when it is hooked up to the tank, it just pours a bunch of gas in and wont start. However, if we unhook the fuel tank the motor will run for several minutes until the fuel that was poured in burns out. If we plug the fuel line in when the motor is running, it will instantly stop. Any ideas what could be the issue?
