He is an interesting looking fish - beauty is in the eye of the beholder
I'm not sure why you had problems with goldfish... was it a ranchu or other fancy variety?
They are hardy, but certain fancy varieties are more sensitive than others. They produce lots of waste, so overstocking is the typical problem. I have 5 goldfish in my 55 g tank, and I consider it stocked to the maximum, although that is accounting for future growth. Whoever decided that this was *the* fish to be in a bowl without filtration is a moron.
Certain varieties are prone to swim bladder disease, which I've lost one to.
What were the symptoms of your fish?
I love reading about exotic fish, but I really appreciate goldfish for the incredible genetic diversity among a species. I know it is selective breeding and technically artificial, but that doesn't make it any less amazing to me.
They are cool fish with neat personalities, and feeding them a varied diet is fun too... mysis shrimp, bananas, peas, kale, lettuce, oranges, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, blood worms, blueberries, garlic, broccoli, etc...
