I'm completely new to catfish and have no idea whats what so having said that, how large do pictus catfish get? I've heard 5", 10" or 12".

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Are the pictus catfish from Petsmart really pictus catfish? I know Petsmart is known for mislabeling their fish.

Agreed on both accounts albeit recently I met with chain LFS fish dept employees (Pet Supermarket) calling Pimelodus blochii/tetramerus types "a striped pictus... versus the spotted one", they pointed out to me, as both kinds were in the same tank. I didn't feel like arguing and who knows, maybe some in SA do call them that...

Anyhow... a (good enough) photo would put the (unlikely but possible, I guess) ID issues to rest as they are indeed quite distinctive.

They love to shoal with their kind and I'd recommend to get at least 6-10 of them to see their more natural behavior and relief their stress. They are very entertaining to watch but only when there is lots of them. One or two or three would hide too much and have pecking disputes.

Ok that's a relief. I know with cichlids there's a lot of labeling issues. I just had to be sure ill end up with a 5" catfish not 12".

That's the exact reason I like them. I've wanted a schooling/schoaling fish in my CA cichlid tank but tiger barbs and giant danios just end up being snacks. My syndontis petricola are nice but I never see them. They're always playing in my driftwood.

The spotted pim stays on the smaller side and do well in groups, the striped pim cam reach 12"
