I know the first rule of moving any spiny catfish is don't use a net.
So anyway I made the schoolboy error of ushering a my Pictus into a container using a net to coax him in when what happens? Yes his pectoral fin becomes lodged in the mesh.
This is not the first time for me for this to happen, on the previous occasion I managed to dislodge it using the back of a spoon, however this time after 30 mins of trying and stressing the hell out of the fish I have had to cut the net, thus resulting in a very unhappy pictus attached to a square piece of net.
Any advice or should I have posted this in the "Laugh your arse off" section?

ummmm The laugh your ass off section wouldn't have taken this seriously ;)

Let him calm down for awhile, reach on in there and snag his butt... pull him out and try again ... thats about all you can do unless you don't mind him swimming in circles for the rest of his life

I remember getting a couple of Zamora Cats from Petco and one of them got their fins snagged in the net. The guy snapped the tip of the spine off and told me it'll grow back...it never did :irked:

Catch him with a specimen container -- ala the ones used by your LFS and then with a Xacto knife carefully cut the net off.

While you're doing this, try to keep him in the water. He should 'freeze' in place and give you time to cut it away.

When I had my fish store getting a Pictus or Pleco stuck in the net was inevitable every time we hired someone.

Good luck

Please dont misunderstand me I wasn't making light of the situation, I just wish I had took more time coaxing him. He's in the quarantine tank at the mo. with the lights off and plenty of cover. I've got some specialist needle nose pliers for placing components in circuit boards. I'll get him under the magnifying light and give it another go.
I've never been stabbed by the spines, how much does it hurt?

It feels like a pin prick.

Cut off as much as you can, then give it a few days, most of the time the remnents will come of themselves.

I did the same a bdrick.... cut off as much as I could and put him back in the main tank. After a few days of swimming around the plants and decor it just fell off. If it is not hurting him or affecting his swimming, it might be a good idea to let it ride for a little while. After a fewdays (for a calming period) and it is still attached maybe try the pliers.

Yeah I would leave it, I had it happen to one of my IDs and I cut the net and he just had a peice of it left on his fin and after about 2 days it fell off.
