Hi,

Well we have had a development. I happen to run across a person locally selling a very nice pig nosed turtle. He has grown her out from a juvenile to the roughly 11" specimen she is now over the last 6 years. I was not really looking for on but she is a great specimen and a great price so I am planning on getting her. I have been reading everything I can find online reguarding their care over the last 4-6 months. The info seems decent but not nearly as complete as with other more common reptiles for specific equipment suggestions.

I have a 220 gallon tank I will be setting up for her (72" x 24" x 30" - L x W x H). This will be her housing for the next year or possibly a year and a half when I can get the 500ish gallon tank for her.

She will be housed in here by herself basically, a few dither type fish but nothing much for load other then her.

The 220 gallon is my old reef tank so it has dual 1.5" overflow drains that can be set up to feed the filtration.

What would you guys recommend for filtration? Large Canister Filter(s)? Sump with a wet dry?

I will be setting up this tank and allowing it to cycle. She will be joining my family around the end of September is the goal if everything is ready for her.

Her current setup is a 135 and she is cramped in there. I feel the 220 is on the small side for her current size and this will only be a short term tank. Her current lighting is a single blue (actinic) bulb - normal output I believe and 3 'puck' lights - appeared to be a small hockey puck size halogen, from home depot. What would a good lighting setup for her be? I know some online sources discuss the the mega ray bulbs but I am still unsure this is the best approach - thoughts? She will be getting a high quality varied diet. I have a parrot that eats most of the same fruits and veggies recommended for these guys.

Thanks!

Well I can not be 100% it is a female. Based off the pics I have seen online I would guess it is a female but I can not say for sure female.

She has the shorter type tail structure, no concaveness at all to the plastron but can n say for sure.

It will be the only pig nosed turtle I keep so does it matter if male or female?

no issues with either sex, but I hate it when people jack up the price on Carettochelys saying its a female. Just recently some dude was selling a 6" Carettochelys for like $700-$1000 (dont recall), and saying it was female. You can guess and guess, but its not a sure thing.. let me see if I can take some pics this week of a true female and male comparison..

I have yet to see any concavenesss in my aquatic turtles, tortoises on the other hand do show it.

the ones pictured here look too small to use at an example:

Alright I follow. Females are generally more valuable then in the FRT market?

This one is what I would consider a very fair price. I have seen it in person and he has had it for a while. It is going to be $700 and he is holding it for a couple months until I can get a setup going for it. The local pickup aspect was huge in my opinion.

Any suggestions for tank setup for equipment, seems like you are experienced with these guys. Is the one in your avatar one in your personal collection?
