Pike and gar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
cichlids usually aren't good tankmates for gars. They usually outcompete gars for food which can lead to starvation for the gar. That and aggression issues. They can also scare the gar into running into the tank walls.

however, it sometimes works. I have a 13" FL/spotted w/ a 10" atabapo fire pike.

there's a chance the gar might be picked on...I've attempted this only once and it didn't work out, although it was with other non-crenicichla cichlids

could work. im growing up a ctenolucius hujeta to put in with my pike tanks. semi silimlar shape to the gar. i like to think that there shouldnt be to much trouble with the gar being at the top iof the tank and the pike at the bottom. i dont imagine they get in alot of fights. thats just my guess tho

the only issue I could imagine would be that I don't think the pike will stay out of the upper parts of the tank

I would say not good tank mates, but you always just try it and keep a close eye on them.

woke up one morning with my asian gar sticking out of my Xingu1 mouth

Don't know if this helps, but I have a spotted gar in with a number of cichids including a 8" jack dempsey, a 10" green terror and a 12" jag, however no pike cichlids. The only issue I have had is ensuring that the gar gets food, due to the cichlids being much more aggresive at feeding time. I started feeding the cichlids at one end of my 180 gal and feeding the gar at the other end. After a few weeks, the gar picked up on the routine and I have not had a problem since. Used a divider to separate them at feeding time in the beginning, but since the gar learned the routine, he comes done to the end of the tank on his own and I no longer need the divider.
