I recently got a "Cichlasoma" salvini (2-3") to go with my lucius (3-4") and was wondering if this mix is ok. I saw a salvini with a bunch of lugubris pikes at my lfs and that is where I got the idea. My pike occasionally will flare at the salvini but no chasing or nipped fins yet.

sounds like they should be fine. Both grow to about the same size, well the pike may get alittle longer but the Salvini will be bulky. They should be alright.

Thank you!

salvini can be pretty aggressive, so keep an eye on that. You've only got them in a 55gal tank, so that doesn't leave much gettaway room...lol. Crenicichla lucius is a Saxatilis pike, so they do stay smaller, and are generally less aggressive, so there is a potential for problems. Its really a toss up, all depending on their corresponding sizes and what not. Should be aight though! ;)

I am getting dither fish to help even out the aggression, but so far nothing more than an occasional chase for 2 sec.

I got 5 jewel tetras that are bigger than the pikes mouth. They seem to be scrappy enough to deal with my cichlids. I know this is much for a 55 but in January I am getting a 75 and I can move fish around.

Sounds Fine to me. They should be good together with some hiding spots. My Lucius Pike is in a tank with two Jags, two Red Atabopa fires, and some silver dollars. Definitely the most aggressive pike for right now out of the others and doesn't get harrassed by the Jags, although, everyone stays out of there way.

lol my lucius is like yours - the boss of the tank and the salvini knows it :)

hahaha, nice. Congrats, dominate fish show the best colors as well, so good stuff.
