Pike Cichlid atabapo II info?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi...I was also thinking of getting a couple of Atabapo II...
I searched thru all the old threads from last year and found out alot of info...
I know they grow to 12 to 14 inches...are very prone to HITH if not kept
in pristine water conditions or get stressed out from fighting.....
(some say a low PH-6.5 and soft clean water are best, lots of driftwood and peat)
They develop a red wine color down there backs and maybe entire body
when adult.....they need a hiding place like a pvc plastic pipe, etc

Check (Vendors forums on this site and TUIC has many pic's of them....very nice fish......I hope this helps a bit.....Goodluck!!

Thanks it does help do you know if they will adventualy acept pelits and he's about 5 inch so far no HITH and hopfully never he's not going to be fighting and I have a good filltration doing like 30% w/c weekly could they still just get it for no reasone?

I've got 3 juvenile Atabapo IIs.

And terrors r us is correct, they get HITH SUPER, SUPER fast. Mine came with it from the LFS, and so far I've been successful at not having it get any worse. My pikes are in a 75 gal tank at the moment, and they get a 40-50% water change every other day. I have a house water softener, so my water is very soft.

All of the juvenile pikes I've had are extremely shy, and these are no exception. If I come anywhere near the tank, they hide. My tank has several caves for them to hang out in.

I've only had success in getting them to eat mysis shrimp. They will not take pellets of any sort yet. I had the same experience with my Johannas when they were young. They grew out of it, but it was frustrating at first, not being able to offer a more varied diet.

Hope that helps...if you've got more specific questions, fire away.

I don't think 30% w/c weekly is going to be enough. I've got 2 big Eheim Pro IIs and a HOB filter on my 75 gal and I do 40-50% water changes every other day.

I have one juv atabapo II in my 90g community, mine isn't particularly shy. So far the only things it will eat are feeders and sometimes bloodworms. I do weekly 30% water changes and use seachem discus buffer and discus trace to soften the water. When I got him from the lfs he had a small amount of hith but from what i can tell it hasn't gotten any worse and may have actually improved some. So far he has been relatively peacefull with tankmate with the only exceptions being that he occasionally displays to my severums (which ae much bigger than he is), and that he chased around my guiniacara when I first added them.

every other day thats crazy i do twice a week 30% on my 55 and thats a good amount of work, i currently have the pike in a 180 with a sump filter. so far no HITH, he is with 3 other fish in a bare bottom tank adding sand today and im adding a clay molded 18x20x18 cave in about a week.

I have my 5 in a 300 and they are not to shy, they come to the front looking for food. Only 1 out of the 5 likes to hide most of the time when it doesn't see anyone near the tank. I have had them for about a month and have seen them picking at 1mm pellets (thera a) but haven't gorged themselves as of yet on them. Mine are starting to take pieces of cut up tilapia but relish black worms and blood worms. They don't seem to like brine shrimp very much. I do have smaller fish in the tank so that maybe the reason they come out more often.

Now does anyone know if they all get the red spot on their tail as they get bigger because my 2 smaller ones don't have the spot visible.

3 are 5" and 2 are 3.5" and they don't seem very keen on taking minnows but did try to do a number on one of my bolivian rams.
