I currently own Doviis... Thinking about trading them in.
The main problem I'm having with breeding, is compatibility with my female. She outgrew my males through a LONG time of bullying them out of food. She was just really mean.
Now that she's paired with a male, she still holds a great deal of dominance. She always has more behavior or actions than any fish I've seen. Shacking her body or head, slapping or fanning the male in the face with her tail, snapping her jaws, and she digs ALL day long.
But when it comes to breeding, she won't stop bullying the male away. She'll run up and bite his face - Not hard, like a quick warning nibble.
6 inches is the closest she lets him get. He can stay, right at 6 inches away (which isn't very far)... But if he hovers over the eggs, she starts biting him.

A video of my doviis in a 200g I got.
Edit: Actually in the video towards the end you see her kind of nibble him and push him away.
She won't let him fertilize them. The eggs all eventually turn white.
It's been a few years of doing this with them... I'm giving up.
The cichlids I'm looking at are:
Jaguars - they're similar to my doviis, but don't have big red teeth
Pike cichlids - look like snakehead fish SORT OF (my favorite freshwater fish ever), so I might get them.
Or maybe some type of solid chocolate/black oscar... Or maybe Tiger oscars again (had some a few years ago).
And I do mean maybe when it comes to Oscars - I hear breeding them can be very very difficult.
And 60% of fun from me keeping monster fish, is the breeding of them.
The other 40% is feeding them dubia roaches and marbled crayfish
Any advice or experiences?
