I bought a group of four pikes that were sold as "a lugubris species, possibly lent...." I originally thought these were sp. venezuela but now I'm wondering. The first three pics were taken the day I picked them up, when they were no more than 4-5 inches. Now, the largest is around a foot. The next 6 pics I took today, moving three of them out of their tank to catch and sell other tankmates. So, they are stressed here, but I was surprised at the brightness of yellow-gold coloring and that each pike had a red abdomen. Generally, when not stressed, they display the darker gold coloring and they also darken at times.

Any guesses on what I have here? Does sp. venezuela display such gold coloring when stressed? Thanks in advance.

I think maybe Strigata. Them and sp. vene look almost identical. Vennies have a black blotch after the gills and strigara do not. From your pics yours doesnt sewm to have blotch. Here is a link I think will help you. Has alot of info on lugubris group. http://pikecichlid.com/art-lugubris.html

Thanks for the info. I see what you are pointing out. I did look at strigata pics online and found one that appears right on in appearance to mine (not sure of this link will work). Not familiar with strigata, but there appears to be a bit of variability in their appearance. Anyone have info on them?
