So - I have had my dempsey in with my C. lucius for about a week now and they have been VERY good buddies... Now my dempsey is starting to get an ego trip and is chasing my pike. Now pikes have a reputation for being mean. When he gets some size to him ( they both are 2" ), will he stand up for himself?

Just be sure that the pike has plenty of spaces to take refuge.
He should be able to hold his own as long as he can get away.
But keep an eye on them to make sure it doesn't get out of hand.

So suppose the out of hand happens? Should I get dithers? I have them in a 55 gal and I was thinking giant danios

You could try a small school GD, I have never personally used them. But I have used Australian rainbows (Which my Marmorata ate all six) and Silver Dollars. Which I use now cause of their shape it is harder for may pikes two swallow.
I have a Trimac and Synspilum and a Zonatus but none of them bother the much smaller pikes.

silver dollars are cool however my eight have been eatin the heck out of my java fern so if you have any plants you may want to go with a larger tetra like a congo or some smaller cichlids like fire mouths when the pike is big enough to hold his own the fms shouldnt be too hard to get rid of that is unless you get attached to them

Any other dither suggestions?

Your Lucius should start to show some signs of aggression once it hits about 4 inches and they are definitely capable of holding their own. Pikes fight alot faster then Jack Dempsey's but the Dempsey's size and shape along with their strenght may be intimidating your little pike for the time being. They should be fine though as long as there are alot of retreats, PVC piping looks good and you can hide it with rocks.

once again, it depends on the fish. Lucius arent really known as fighters. Most talk of aggressive pikes are from the Lugubris group or with just the same group together.

Make sure the tanks has enough cover for the pike and it should be good. since it's faster it can get out of sight. go get some T and Y pipes maybe a nice piece of wood.

Yeah, Im with these guys as far as cover goes. Give it a few pieces of PVC for shelter and all will mellow out.

Ok added more pvc and hopefully all will work out
