I'm debating on rearranging my tanks around and there is an Orange Pike at the LFS that I really like. My question is as it gets bigger, would it have issues with my lima shovelnose or my bichir? They are all in the 4-6" range right now, with the pike being the smallest. This would be in a 75 gallon with tons of cover (rocks, pipes, plants, etc...) should I give it a go, or should I just let somebody else pick him up from the store?

Go for it, but Pikes are all different. Just hope yours doesn't try and dominate everyone in a hurry. They get over a foot, I'm not exactly sure. You'd probably have to get rid of the Green Terror, Loiselle (SP?), as these all get about the same size and a 75 gallon is to small for a Green terror, Loiselle, lima, and bichir to be house with an Orange pike at adult sizes.

Word, I have him growing out in a 29 by himself for now... still only 3" or so... i'm not so much worried about the green terror, or the loiselle, I will be donating them to friends tanks when the time comes... im more concerned about the bichir and shovelnose being eaten or killed when the pike gets of size...

Ahhh, but your shovelnose and bichir will be safe, but keep an eye on them just to be safe.

They may be ok, initially. Give it a little time, though. My experience would have me believe that the orange pike will likely kill the shovelnose and bichir, eventually. Those Xingu I pikes tend to be pretty brutal w/ tankmates. My Xingus can't be housed w/ anything else.

We will see how it goes when he gets a little bigger and is added in there I suppose.

MY PIKE IS ABOUT 10 INCHES AND IN WITH 3 BIRCHIRS ,TSN AND A TSN X PERRUNO CAT AND I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY HOSTILITY , ALTHOUGH WITH PIKES IT TENDS TO VARY ON THE INDIVIDUAL.

Every pike vary in tempermant, and if I am wrong, correct me, but don't Xingu 1 Pikes usually have 2 color changes in their life time? If so, they won't look like their young selves.

Hahahaha, this thread is classic. Anywho, like Nadus said, xingu I are among the most aggressive of the pikes. My eventually had to house my pair solo cuz they were pickin on/killin all or anything i put in with them. Rather frustrating but they are worth it. If you had a LARGE tank, 150gal plus you might get away with it easier. But xingu I you will be pushin your luck. I would wait till the pike is at least 5" though before puttin it with them since it might end up as food otherwise...:S

For sure, I was thinking atleast 5 maybe 6. I have had one of these such pikes before, and have seen them as adults so I know about the color changes and all of that... THis is going to be a single pike so there will be no chance of breeding aggression or anything of that sort.

Like I said before, I suppose we will just see when it happends.
