Just wanted to share, I finally got a decent video of my pike, still not positive on an I.D. Let me know what you think. By the way if it helps he has a dark lateral stripe nose to tail, but when I video him it fades.

I'm going with lucius or proteus(male). Hard to ID sax group pikes

I've had a group of 5 lucius I can say with confidence this isn't a lucius. Doesn't look like a proteus hard to explain but the base color and a few other things are off IMO especially when compared to V kutty's pics of his pair... Only thing that makes me a little wary of this is in the video there wasn't a spangles humeral blotch on the pike
Looks like a male lepidota IMO but then again there's no spangled humeral blotch... For now i think it'd be safe to call it a male lepidota

The lack of spangles is what kept me from guessing lepidota. Proteus were the least spangled saxs pikes I ever kept. But still had the gold face of lepidota

Yeah the lack of spangles was really throwing me off too which made me cross off saxatilis.... Made me suspicious as well of lepidota although some variants of lepidota don't have many spangles at all just a spangled humeral blotch which this guy has... You got any pics of your proteus? Idk if it's just me but do proteus lack a spangled humeral blotch? All pics I've seen the do. I think they do and this guy has a spangled humeral blotch

None of the females I had showed any spangles but some of the males showed a couple spangles around the blotch when young, but seemed to fade with age. You could probably find some of my old pics in the creni forum... they are going to be ancient threads though, petrified in the interweb

yeah if you saw any of @jubbd other recent threads you'll see the spangled humeral blotch... So probably lepidota??? If it was a proteus then I'd expect not to see none to hardly any at 9-10 inches then based off what you're saying?

His dorsal fin trailers and the top of his tail fin are super red if that helps I noticed most lepidota have the golden cheeks as well
