As the title states.
Tank is 36 gallons, so that would limit it to only the smaller species.
Ph is on their high end, I think it is about 7.6, so not very bad.
Mbunas are mbunas... especially the dominant auratus who is evil.
Probably answering my question but here goes:
Are there any small pike cichlids that can live with mbunas?

I don't know about the crenicichla mbuna combination but I would not keep any mbuna in 36 gallons. Thats way too small.
Thanks for the reply.
I’m learning that the hard way myself. They’ve been in there over two years and I’ve yet to find a balance between overstocked and bioload compiled with them being downright nasty. I knew nothing about mbunas when I got them and never had a chance to upgrade.

In a 36 gallon with established mbuna? Not going to be a good mix. The mbuna will defend their territory against the pike. And only the smallest swarf pikes would be fit to live in that tank- they would be no match for the africans. If you wanted pike cichlids in a tank that small, they (compressiceps or regani) would have to be the main focus, only cichlids imo.
Also, the higher pH would not be optimal.

That’s what I was thinking. Thanks!
