since pikes have no interest in eating vegetation what do you guys think of a planted tak? especially with Java fern and moss which don't need substrate? ANy reason this wouldn't work well? Also, any other cichlids thta would go well with pikes that aren't going to chomp and chow down on the plants?

There are quite a few members in here with planted tanks, especially for Sax group. Not only do they not eat them but they will rarely dig them up and decimate the root system.
If I had a pike only tank I would definitely keep plants. Alas All my pikes reside in communities of larger cichlids which will not allow me to keep plants. Not even if they are fake.
As for as other cichlid, I am not really familiar with any right of hand maybe another member can help there.

I have my C.Saxatilis in a heavily planted tank and they do now dig up the plants. They do dig though. I don't know if it is only breeding behavior but mine are making major excavations under large pieces of driftwood. A few plants has been dug up in the process but most are ok.

i like the look of a planted tank. but ive been using silk plants with great success. but in the future i want to switch over to live. my pikes have not shown any intrest in the plants at all

here is an old pic

Pikes are perfect for planted tanks because, as stated above, they have not interest in digging.....For the most part....

Other cichlids that don't dig much are Cichla so that may be an option for a really large tank.

Pikes and plants definitely work. This is one of my favorite pics (damn scratch on the glass). At the time of this pic, cichlid-wise, I had my red snook pair, the female polleni, and the two Xingu I. None of them dug.

wow...those xingu's are just wow....very nice
I definitely agree R1. They are strong. Hey Crystalized I am looking for a nice female X1. So if you want to get rid of one I'll definitely buy it.
