I will restart my 142g (59"x23"x23") tank next week (just moved to a new house). The plan is to get some pikes for it. It looks like I can get some 4-5" C. Saxatilis from my local store, the might be some other pikes available too.

The tank will be (very) heavily planted with lots of hiding places.

As I understand it my best bet to get a breeding pair is to buy 5-6 young fish (I assume 4-5" is pretty young?), is this correct?

Is the tank size good for 5-6 C. Saxatilis? I might get a bigger tank in the future or sell off a few of the pikes when they get bigger.

Get them small and let them sort the rest out. They will b e cool for a while till they hit their "teenageyears" then you will start to see a little aggression. I had 5 svenis in a heavily planted 60, then all the sudden 1 became dominant and killed a couple of the others and kept the other 2 pinned uder driftwood or hidden in the mosswall. Please be sure to post pics of this project, sounds killer.

your getting actuall Saxatilis. Sweet, definitely post pics, those Pikes look great when full grown and their spangling shows up on them.

Youre in for a treat my comerade!!! Welcome to the gang!!

Well, I'm not 100% sure its actual Saxatilis but that what they are listed as from the wholesaler.

;) Nailed it! Most Saxatilis pikes are labeled as Crenicichla saxatilis on the list. Its pretty much a generic way of labeling all Saxatilis group pikes. If you get TRUE saxatilis that would be awesome. Chances are though that it may be sveni, lucius, or the like. Being in Sweden though, your chances are probably a lot higher of gettin the real thing! You should look into some rarer pikes! You guys can get everything over there. I wouldn't put Crenicichla tigrina past you guys! LoL!

I have emailed the wholesaler to see if they have any more information, where the pikes are from and so on. Other than that I guess I will just have to wait and see.

Will I be able to see the difference between true saxatilis and the others in fish this young?

Looks like I will go and pick up the pikes tonight.

The wholesaler didn't know where they were from so I guess we will have to try to id them ourselves.
