Do people use pillow stuffing as mechanical filter media? I am building a DIY mechanical filter for the return in my sump and am thinking about using polyester batting as a disposable prefilter. The bag says "100% pure polyester fiberfill".

The real plus is that it is super cheap and available locally. Any drawbacks?

I have used polyester quilt batting pads cut to size in my HOBs for a long time. It works great, and I haven't seen any drawbacks.

works well and is VERY cheap!!!

Filter fiber- $5.98 100% polyester fiber

Pillow fiber- $2.85 100% polyester fiber

quilt/pillow batting is where it's at man! all the pro's use it, except amano...he probably uses 24k gold filament.

I've used it, but I like the fabric stores poly better. It's flat and comes in sheets instead of a wadded up ball. About the same price too.

I have seen it used many, many times. Myself, I gave up and switched to filter socks. Loving it so far.

I use quilt batting. As stated above it is easy to 'cut to fit' and scraps can be stuffed around other media to diriect flow. I would say the only drawback is, it clogs quickly, less than a week, so use it where it's easy to get to for maintenance. For this reason I don't use it in my canaster filters, I just wrap the intakes.

Been thinking about a diy sump myself, I think I am going to go the same route as Pharoah, and use filter socks on the drop tube. Maybe use the batting as the overflow screen.

I just bought some of this stuff and stuffed it in two of my HOBs... Hopefully it will take care of some of the finer particles that the cartridges used to miss.
