its been a long time since i was on but im back and need a lil advice. my girlfriend and i just got a pictus cat and we're wondering some do's and donts hes is in a 20g with 2 sig bichirs one is 6" and the other is about 5" the cats about 3". good cover and they seem to be getting along. just wondering if there were any lil tricks for the cat

Hi, Pictus catfish are very peaceful, though when larger can eat tiny fish, but just make sure that if you have to move / transport it, you catch it in an extremely fine net or a jar, as there are large spines on the pectoral fins that will get caught in a normal net. Other than that, they are awesome fish!

I had some in with a senegal and they seemed to piss the sen off. Other than that it was fine. A 20 won't be good permanent, i had mine in a 20long for a while and they were too fast. Doing much better in a 55.

i've never kept a pictus that was peaceful..hell..my 6 incher will pick one fish and harrass it for a week until he finds a new victim, i've kept 7 in the last 4 years, all have been pretty aggressive and territorial..maybe im just picking out the bad seeds, lol

good luck with yours though, they grow to about 8" and are very active, so you might want to consider a larger tank.

the 20g is a temp tank as soon as we get a bigger appartment we will be getting a 100g tank but this may be a few months. thank you.

Can you show me a 8" one?? Or even a 6" one. Sure your thinking of the right species? Everything i can find says 6" max and ive never seen one that big. 5 is more like it.

i've seen a few around 8 inches, mostly in chinatown here. mostly blochii, i've seen two pictus at around that size. they may be rare, but they are around.

this one was about 8.5"

Thats a blochii isnt it? Ille agree they can get that big but have never seen a pictus like the original question was about that size even close to that.
I know im being overly specific anyway and it doesnt matter that much. Bottom line if ya want something around 8" get a blochii.

Yes, that picture is of a Blochii. Pictus cats usually don't get over 6", and I'd be in awe of one over 8''.
