i was wondering if anyone knew the maximum size for a pimelodus pictus catfish i have seen websites that either say around 10" but www.fishbase.org says the max size is 4" im not sure which one is right

I have heard a TON of speculation on this one. With as many different max sizes that I have seen, I finally found one report that could possibly be correct.

It depends on what region they are originally from. I have heard the ones collected from Columbia grow to a different max size than those collected from Peru and other regions. I am not exactly sure of the specifics.. A self-proclaimed 'Fish Master' of 40 years told me they get 16", while other people say 10", Fishbase says 4" and PetSmarts tag says 8". So In my opinion, the regional difference sounds like the closest thing to factual. :)

Good Luck..

I got a spotted pictus, which seems to be the same specie as what fishbase.org lists, at 2.5" 2 years ago. It is now 5" TL. I think it'll prolly take 5 years before it would manage to reach 6"

I had a pictus several years ago that reached 6 inches in two years. It never really grew after that.

My pictus is about 2 years old and around 4-5". I don't see him growing much more. There are two varieties...one from Columbia and Peru as blacktip stated. They are the same species just different sudspecies I guess. You can read all about it at www.planetcatfish.com
