Okay I was letting my BF help me clean the hard water and algae off of the top of the tanks glass ... well I was on the phone for a minute and I came back and finished scrubbing the tanks glass cover in the bathtub.
Wiped them down with a rag on the table and put it back on the tank..

Then I noticed the unmistakable smell of pine sol :WHOA: I asked my BF why everything smelled like it, "Oh because I was cleaning the top of the tank with it" :WHOA::WHOA::WHOA::WHOA::WHOA::WHOA::WHOA::WHOA::WHOA:

WHAT?!! I took everything off the tank, got a clean rag and re-wiped everything down that he put pine sol on, and I guess he sprayed it on the rag, and then wiped ONLY the top, the plastic that holds the glass pieces up, and he said he didnt spray any on the tank and he doesnt think anything off of the rag went into the tank :nilly:

I believe him, but does this mean my fish are goners?? :( There is no pine sol smell anymore after I cleaned everything... The fish all seem fine, no stress or anything...

Will they be okay??

agreed, water change would be nice and keep a check on your water conditions just to be safe!

just to be safe... Water change. A big water change. doesn't have to be all at once, but maybe 25% a day over the next several days.

I was planning of doing a vac and water change tomorrow.. I wanted to do it tonight but I just put some new fish in and dont want to stress them to much... Do you think I can wait til tomorrow and do it? Or should I do it tonight??:uhoh:

It wasnt straight pine sol, it was diluted with water in a spray bottle..

I seriously almost had a damn heart attack when he told me that.. :irked: He looked freaked out just by the face I made lol

well, if something like that happened with my tank, the water would have already been changed. But, its up to you what you choose to do. chances are, nothing did get in there. But, in my eyes, if there was even a slight chance my water could be contaminated, i'd drop everything and get it changed.

I just did a 50% water change. And re-cleaned the top glass and top of the plastic. So far everyone seems fine.. Nothing smells like pine sol.

The fish seem even happier now, but I think thats just because they like it when everything is fresh.

*whew* I feel better.. I think that was the fastest water change/tank cleaning I have ever done..

My BF is not allowed near my tank without my constant supervision. Who knew that it wasnt common knowledge not to use cleaners on/near a tank.. :screwy:

I know lol I didnt yell at him or anything. I seriously thought he was joking, and when it clicked that he wasnt I made him go over and show me exactly what he did, and made sure he didnt put any in the tank or spray it in the tank..
He got so serious when I told him that pine sol could kill ALL the fish. I dont want to be mean to him, he helped a lot and got the glass lid really clean with a scrubber in the bath tub.. he just knows now that no matter what he cant use anything except water on the tank.
Lol and I even bought him his own fish today! :p
