I have a tank full of pink convicts and yesterday I added two black females. No one wanted to pair up with the pink females but today a large pink male and a black female are defending a corner of the tank. Are pinks and blacks close enough to produce ofspring? Will the offspring be sterile? I have been told that pinks are albinos but I have also been told that they are a separate animal all together.

Should I leave them be, or should I go back to the 1960's and get a Christian Funamentalist preacher to set them straight?

I believe that they're both the same species, just different color morphs. So they shouldn't be sterile, but I don't think that the colors will be that great, IMO> Good Luck with the spawn!

As far as I know, they will happily interbreed, but I think you will get either pinks OR blacks, depending on the PARENTS lineage. Don't think you get a cross of both. This has been discussed before - either in the cichlid or breeding forum - can't remember which. Have a look and see what you can find. Good Luck.

dude their the same species.

Same species, pinks are just color morphs.

Also, they are convicts, they will breed with anything. A friend has one that paired with an angel... :screwy:

as stated in the above 2 posts they are the same species, I have a couple pairs of each. the pinks only have pink offspring where as the blacks have both but only 20% are pink.

a friend of mine did the same thing. Bderick67 is right the blacks will have pinks and no there not albino and there not sterile. They will breed with the balcks.

Thanks Everyone for the great info. They have laid claim to two clay pots but have yet to lay eggs. None of the others have paired up. The black female seems to accept another large pink male when her boyfriend is eating or chasing someone else off.

Yeah, they are the same fish. The colors of the offsping wil be a guess. I have seen two large pink convicts have 95% of their offspring turn out as black convicts
