I have a kinda breeding pair of pink convicts. I say kinda cuz theyve had babies they just dont survive or even swim. my girlfriend thinks the mother or father eats them. I dont understand it, theyve done it 3 times so far with no continuing offspring success. I've seriously had black cons get it right everytime, my question is do pink cons have greater difficulty breeding? or does it not matter? I also have a salvini with them in a 65g. could he be eating them when the lights go out? I dont know. any ideas would be appreciated. thanx-salty

the sal. could be eating them at night though....

you could also try removing the slate or rock that they lay their eggs on and placing it into another tank until they hatch and grow up a bit more.

i always remove my adult convicts after they are done spawning, leave the eggs to hatch on their own. as long as you have some good fry food by the third day after they hatch , they will do fine without the parents.

i also have one breeding pair that is a black female and a pink male, they do just fine.

Convicts in general are usually amazing parents, fighting off fish over twice their size. I doubt the Salvini is getting to the fry. But if you are still speculating try setting up a divider in the tank see how that goes. If the fry are still dissapearing then try removing the adults or putting the fry in a sanctuary of some sort. Be sure the eggs aren't exposed to air though I read that that would immediately kill them...

GOOD LUCK

I had a similar problem with regular convicts that were rather young and inbred. I assumed it was due to age (inexperience in raising fry) or bad genes (the babies did not develop fully, and the parents ate them).

They are at it again, the female is in total kill mode. She's not letting anyone into the back right corner. It's been a few days, but the male has taken refuge elsewhere, and he is a good sized sucker. He seems to be fending off the male salvini. The salv def. rules the tank, the pink male con is a close second, and a male black con is third, but he keeps to himself. Its amazing,I have 4 or 5 decent sized pieces of slate about 5-6", I think the male con has used them to form some kind of protection against the other fish.

isn´t pink cons a product of inbreeding? atleast i produced pinks from natural cons by inbreeding... anyway, the inbreeding might explain why they have trouble breeding, or atleast producing living fry...
