I have two pink convicts (male and female) and they are about 2" long. They live in a 180g tank with various other SA/CA cichlids, and they are the smallest inhabitants. The larger ones approx 4". Including a larger breeding pair of black convicts. My question is, the female convict is forever chasing the male away? I have heard of and experienced the male chasing the female but not this? I know the female is a female as she has the orange on her belly, and the male has no colour and has extended dorsal and anal fins. I believe the female to be ready to breed because of this colour and because she is very round in the belly. I am wondering if the size of them is stopping them from breeding? Or is it something totally different? Any help would be greatly appreciated? I should also mention i have a rogue black male convict in there who is probably about 2.5-3" (a spare from when i was trying to get a black pair, i managed to get rid of the others but not this guy) he doesn't seem to bother either of the pink Cons, but i wondered if his presence stops the pink male from interacting with the female?
Thanks Grant

Anyone??

maybe she just doesnt want to breed with that one? i had 1 male and two females together for a while and the male would go back and forth taking turns breeding with the 2 females. altho my females never chased the males, so my story is irrelevant. sorry

If she's showing the usual solid orange/red patch, she's physically ready. Odds are something just isn't to her liking. I've got a pair at the far end of a tank that haven't spawned, while their neighboring 2 pairs have had 7-8 spawns.

Shifting / adding decor or plants can trigger with the new territories, but probably isn't worth it if your tank is stable.

Odds are they'll eventually go at it.

Yeah, she is definately ready (bright orange), and they are now showing breeding behaviour - tail slapping, shaking and flaring etc. They have cleaned several areas, and protect them as though they have spawned, they just haven't spawned as of yet. the male is now significantly larger than the female, he is probably 3"+ and she is around 2-2.5". I personally think they haven't spawned because of their size, however, they can fend off my 5" male GT who is a brute. So i am sure they will spawn soon. i will keep you posted, and i will try upload pics!
