I wanted to see is this something to do with mating or is this an outburst of fungus?

I've never owned one of these but I think it's fungus.

The eggs do hatch out of their backs.....cant tell if your are breeding. Never kept them before.

Thanks so much for your messages! It does seems to be a sort of fungus I'm gonna treat him hopefully he pulls thru.

Wouldn't worry. I've owned MANY african clawed frogs and 1 has gotten fungus at least 3 times (in fact i think he has some now), and they've all pulled through. These guys aren't too different and both are quite hardy.

They're not breeding, i've seen them with eggs before
