pipe size for sump?

I have a 40 gallon sump to go to a 120 gallon tank. I wanna get 2 electric blue jack dempsey and from what I read they destroy the plants, so I wanna be able to use the sump and put plants in there. Welcome to MFK! There are charts to calculate pipe size stickyed at the top of the DIY forum for reference. To answer your question I would use 1" schedule 40 for that size return pump. It would leave you with a little bit of room for safety factor. What type of drain setup and overflow are you planing on going with? Are you planing on drilling the tank? I would highly recommended drilling the tank over any overflow box kit. If your looking for the plants to consume nitrate there are much better plants out there for that job. Water sprite is one of them as well as pothos or water lettuce. I don't see any reason you can't run plants in the display tank though, just a thought.
