This Sunday night I came back to my apartment. All the tanks were in tip top shape, but when I looked at the piranhas they were all darker in colour then they were Friday night when I left for the week end. I fed them and then did a water test and every thing looked good, but they are still darker. I am wondering if this darker colour means any thing or is it that they are or are not stressed.
Any help would be much appreciated.

it could possibly be from stress since they only have been in ur tank for 2weeks piranhas can take some time to adjust to new surroundings... but the other possible reason for dark in color is if you have dark substrate ..when i changed mine from brown pebbels to black sand they have gottin much darker but still very healthy and cooler lookin

Everytime my reds breed, they turn almost completely black......This metamorphasis happens 2-3 days before they are about to spawn...Check for any signs of digging or fierce territorial behaviour....If you are still worried about them, shoot me an email(or pm), I'll buy them off of you for a NICE price....lol

Is there an easy way to tell males apart from females? and if they are feeling frisky how do i tell if they are going to breed?

You can not tell the difference in male and female Red Belly's. Mine laid eggs a few weeks ago and turned very dark first. They become a little extra territorial at that time as well.

Holly crap I am amazed. They have been doing exactly that. They are a gun metal black and they are very territorial and they have been lying flat on their sides and flapping at the ground. I never thought that they would be breeding (or trying to). They have not been in this tank more then three weeks now and the tank has only been running for four and a half weeks.
