Would a tank with drift wood and java ferns be ok for red bellies , also I see alot of people use gravel instead of sand with their pirahnas
is there a reason?

java ferns and driftwood would be more than just ok, they love the stuff, there are also many other types of plants that do very well in low light settings under the lights that usually come with aquariums.

the sand/gravel choice is based on personal preference unless you are doing plants, then the substrate choice becomes a bit more important

that should be fine but piranah well andventraly tear your ferns apart though and they could be keep in sand or gravel it just a prefrence my Ps would freak out if i walked in the room at night or in the morning and would bolt across the tank and slicen my fake plants up but they will last for a while lol

not all piranhas will tear up plants, there are plenty of planted piranha tanks. it works well if you have plants in there when they are small so that they can grow with them in there.

I have a java fern and it keep producing daughter plants so I guess I can jst replace them everythime they get ripped up
