Piranha 55g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depends what species.

I'm assuming you mean Pygocentrus nattereri, but I've seen a fes different species listed as red belly's.

They get to about 12 inches so if your 55 is a standard size it won't really be big enough for one comfortably. an 80 gallon or a tank that is 16 inches wide or more would be better.

depends how big you get them, if they're about an inch, you could probably have at least 5 for a while and rehome when necessary due to aggression/water quality issues

Our new local store sells them at about an inch, maybe a bit smaller for like $4. So I would be getting them about an inch. Pretty sure they are nattereri.

On a side not how does one go about tank maintenance like when you have to put your hand in the tank? Business as usual?

Piranhas aren't as aggressive as people think. If you stick your hand in they will probably just freak and swim away. In the wild piranhas only attack sick and dying animals and other fish. ( I so only loosely as reports have been made of attacks on cattle and such)
