I own two red bellies, their the same size, and they keep swimming into each others gills and chasing each other around the tank, theyve nipped each others fins but that is expected. Sometimes they also swim in circles, is this normal behaviour?

Pretty normal for them to fight like that...2 is a very bad number though..You should pick up a third to spread the aggression out.

Thanks, they are also in a 2ft 15gall tank, hopefully not for much longer, but is it likely to stunt their growth? if so by how much?

It will not stunt their growth, you need frequent water changes and keep them well fed though. How big are they? currently you have a recipe for disaster, only 2 Ps in a small tank, Denpending on the size of the fish, you headed for a single P.

Try to pick up one more, and move to a 4 foot tank, a 75 gallon would be best.

Edit: O.K. I just saw your other post with the video(nice job with it, by the way) looks like they are still relatively small so you do have some time to get them into the larger tank. Still would go get at least one more soon.

Good rule of thumb, 1 adult piranha to 20 gallons of tank.

Good luck and enjoy

Thanks, I do frequent water changes weekly 20%, and feed them three times a day. They are about 5" and I have had them for about 5 months, i think they were about 2" when i first had them.

Wow your piranhas seemed smaller in the video. You really need to upgrade now! Two 5 inch piranhas in a 15 gallon is very bad! And that excludes the pleco! Even if your filtration is extremely efficient and overpowered, that water will only be okay at the best of times considering you have 3 very messy and growing fish that you feed 3 times a day!

Get a 60 gallon set up a.s.a.p and introduce another piranha of similar size. I suggest losing the pleco as well until you get a bigger tank.

The reason they will be nipping is because there is only two of them, you really need three if not four. While their erratic swimming in circles is a sign of lack of space I recon (it is how many of my fish have reacted in the past when put into small tanks).

Just do the best you can, upgrade tank size and introduce another piranha. You have two very nice specimens; it would be a shame for them not to have what they need to thrive and show off their beauty.

they are more like 3incher from that vid! almost the same as mine :)

from what ive herd keeping fish in a smaller tank will make the fish grow slower, besides for more p's try turning the heat down and either making more territories or just keeping it empty.. but before anything you gota get them out of a 15g
