I have juvenile 6 RBP. For their tank I use a power filter and today i turned it off. I saw a big difference in their behavior. when the filter is working, they seem to be tensed and sometimes chased each other. But when the filter isn't working, they are very calm and not chasing others. They now live as a pack (shoal). So I decided to use the filter every day 2 hours only. let me know what you think....

my personal experience with red belly piranhas was the opposite. Sure they were more active but they were no more or less chasing/attacking each other with or without the powerhead on. They were constantly "playing" and swimming in the powerhead

how big of a tank do you have and where and how high/low was your powerhead located? mine rotated from the 2 long sides of the tank but was kept really high with dead spots below

tank is 45 gallon and piranhas are just 3-4 months old. powerhead located in a bottom corner of the tank.
soon I'm going to buy a 120 gallon tank for them. But for now, I think the tank size is ok for them.

Does the internal filter have your Bio media? Because 2 hours may not be enough turnover for the ammonia to be converted to n03!

The filter could be leaking stray voltage into the tank. Had the same happen with a cheapo marineland powerhead. They were all nippy and skitz then I turn it off and their fine. Ditched it for better equipment and bought a grounding probe to forever avoid the problem...

Get a new filter. Ac110 ime

The water needs to move because of the nitrogen cycle like F1 said, and also the best way to kelp the oxygen levels in the water high, is to have the filter breaking the surface.

Yeah keeping it in the bottom of the tank is more for other charchins like ATF that need a strong current to swim into, piranhas don't really need it. They need the filtration and more airation. So put the jet up on the top of the tank on the surface.

now they are fine.....
tnx

6-4" piranhas in a under filtered 45 gallon tank that only has a filter running 2 hours per day after failing to take anyone's advice..... wow and you call keeping blacks cruel.....
