Was wondering if anyone here has successfully breed piranha's at all and if so do you have any pics? Of your setup?

the reason why I asked as long ago when i did more freshwater and was still a kid people always said piranha's can't be breed in captivity and I was going through note's I made as a youngster and came across the note I took and figured what better way then to ask on this site. Have you two breed piranha at all? Thanks also for the response to my thread.

It's been done. With Pygocentrus nattereri it's relatively common. It takes special setups for a lot of species of piranha. Serrasalmus species are more difficult because of their antisocial nature, but it's been done with maculatus and spilopleura a few times. Some other species have been done in zoology labs and public aquariums.

I figured you would need a special setup for this to be done I don't recall ever reading on how to tell the difference in sexes in piranha's to begin with let alone breed. But I'm glad to see people have been doing so.

for pygo it would be fairly easy compare to serra as they are very difficult to cohab and you can't really sex them to be sure that you have a male and female pair.
I'm sure it can be done with a large enough tank to put multiple rhoms together, that's how mother nature does it in the Amazon, but most of us can't duplicate that of course and rarely someone is willing to house only few 10"+ fish in a 10,000 gallon tank/pond.
I've had rbps breed in my old 45g before.

They're not sexually dimorphic. You can't tell by looking. When they get in breeding colors the males get super dark. Actually the breeding pair in general gets very dark.

here's a good post about RBP's breeding:

There's a bunch of folks on P cove breeding all kinds of piranhas.
