i have 5 piranhas in a 75 gallon, one of them has cloudy eyes - is there anything i can do to rid him of it? is it contagious? what causes it? there's really no way for me to isolate it either unless i allow it to eat all the fishes in my community tank..

i made several attempts to take a picture of it but the flash and the low lighting in my basement makes it difficult.

looks like the beginning stages of ammonia burn.

Check params and look for left over food then plenty of clean water, salt and bump temps. Possible even an emergency ammonia toxifye...you can find the directions for that on the back of a bottle of prime

The reason i suggest this is because i've seen it in my own tank and upon checking water that was the problem. I'd find left over food stuck under driftwood

i up'd the temp, did a massive water change and changed the carbon in the filter. my lfs didn't carry prime because he said they gave false nitrate levels or whatever. so i had to use what he recommended instead. hope all will go well, thanks for the help

prime is the #1 recommended water treatment on this site. you should consider ordering some. did your lfs have a recommendation for emergency dosage for whatever they recommended?

I'd do 20 percent water changes every other day until you get it back under control.

Cloudy eye can be caused by stress and poor water conditions, more often then not it's the combo - good water quality and low stress is the cure. Salts (salinity) can help with the over all balance of health within the fish (homeostassis) however it is no cure for Eye issues. So long as it is Cloudy Eyes (Infection) and not Fungal or Bacterial it won't spread to other fish however if the stress continues the eyes may bulge leading to more permenant issues like scar tissue and even blindness. Test the water - correct any negative readings by cleaning, increasing water changes as needed, increasing filtration and water flow if needed, feed quality foods stay away from goldfish, increasing oxygen and surface aggitation is always a plus, and if the fish is being chased or bullied he may have to be removed to lower his stress during recovery.
